Haivision’s Broadcast IP Transformation Report 2021 Shows SRT Use is on the Rise

Haivision recently surveyed its broadcast customers and prospects to gain clearer insights into what challenges they faced this past year, and what technologies they are currently using and planning to invest in to overcome them. Over 500 broadcast and video streaming professionals from around the globe participated in the survey representing a wide range of organizations from national television networks to OTT and broadcast services as well as production studios. The results were fascinating, and the findings have been packaged in Haivision’s Broadcast IP Transformation Report 2021.

“2020 brought about considerable changes to the broadcast landscape, forcing broadcasters to be more creative and innovative than ever,” said Peter Maag, Chief Commercial Officer and EVP Strategic Partnerships, Haivision. “These survey results have provided us with interesting datapoints into how broadcasters are migrating their workflows to incorporate modern technologies including 4K and HEVC, IP networking, and cloud services.”

SRT is Widely Adopted

When asked which video transport protocols they currently used, 53% of those surveyed said they used SRT.

The internet is the dominant way that broadcasters transport live video for contribution with 82% of respondents saying it is a preferred method. With the need for a secure and reliable way to send low latency video over the public internet becoming more important, SRT’s increased adoption continues to show that it’s making huge strides to becoming the defacto standard for low latency video transport.

Other highlights from the report include:

  • 71% of respondents believe that COVID-19 has accelerated IP adoption in their organization
  • Transitioning to IP and enabling remote collaboration are the top two challenges faced by broadcast professionals
